Audacity is a long-developed, free audio recording, analysis, and non-linear editing program with multi-track support and MIDI import capability. The developers have made the tool available for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.
Audio recording with Audacity Audacity is equipped with features that allow you to record audio via a microphone connected to your computer, a mixer, and from a variety of other sources, and it can also capture audio streams. The application can record multiple channels simultaneously, with 24-bit audio depth and a sampling rate of up to 192,000 Hz (with high-quality hardware, the frequency goes up to 384,00 Hz). Audacity allows you to record audio with low latency and create multi-track recordings.
Editing and audio quality Audio editing with the tool is mainly based on the timeline, where it is possible to precisely cut, copy, paste and delete selected parts of an audio track. Audacity offers unlimited sequential undo and redo of operations performed by the user, allows editing and mixing of a large number of tracks, synchronize tracks and labels, and smoothly increases and decreases volume, manipulating speed and pitch. The program supports 16-, 24- and 32-bit samples and lets you convert sample rates and formats automatically in real-time.
Plug-ins and effects in Audacity The program supports LADSPA, LV2, Nyquist, VST, and Audio Unit effects plug-ins and supports experimental modules to extend their functionality. It allows you to generate sounds, silences, noises, instruments, or a rhythm track; it also allows you to perform noise reduction and change frequencies (thanks to Equalization, Bass and Treble, High Pass, Low Pass, and Notch Filter) and perform various types of song mixing using high-quality filters. With Audacity, it is possible to reduce or isolate vocals and create backing tracks for podcasts and DJ sets (using the Auto Duck effect).
Other Audacity features Other options offered by the program include support for many keyboard shortcuts, spectrogram view mode, conversion of tapes and recordings to digital form, and excellent support for WAV, AIFF, AU, MIDI, MP3, and OGG formats. With external libraries, it can work with additional formats such as AC3, M4A/M4R (AAC), and WMA.
